There was a period where there wasn’t much good Korean Dramas going on especially when I was looking forward to Suits because of Park Hyung-sik but it turned out to be a little disappointment. So when I happen to come across Wok of Love, I was very happy!
Wok of Love is a typical rom-com (romantic-comedy if you don’t know the abbreviation) Korean Drama. I was hooked on it after the first week of two episodes came out earlier this May. The storyline revolves mainly around three characters: Jung Ryeo-Won as Dan Sae-Woo, Lee Jun-Ho as Seo Poong and Jang Hyuk as Doo Chil-Seong.
Jung Ryeo-Won as Dan Sae-Woo
Ladies first, so I’ll talk about Jung Ryeo-Won who plays the female lead in the Wok of Love Korean Drama, Dan Sae-Woo. I’ve always like Jung Ryeo-Won from the first time I saw her acting in My Name Is Kim Sam-soon as Hyun Bin’s ex-girlfriend who ran off from their relationship because she has stomach cancer if I never remember it wrongly. She tends to fall into acting in pitiful roles, always involving her getting sick even when she acted alongside Lee Dong-wook in Bubble Gum. I heard she has very good skin complexion so she often hardly ever puts on makeup when filming.
Dan Sae-Woo is a chaebol’s daughter, 34 years old, a little silly, a little naive. Someone who always wanted to get married and settle down, a bride to be until her groom stood her up and her father got involved in the law and got caught on her wedding day. She sometimes roams around the streets with her pet horse because why not right? Having dogs or cats as pets is so yesterday. She keeps having cravings for Jajangmyeon in the Wok of Love Korean Drama, making me hungry also watching it.
Lee Jun-Ho as Seo Poong
Lee Jun-Ho plays Seo Poong, one of the two main male leads in Wok of Love Korean Drama that will later on develop a love triangle with Dan Sae-Woo and Doo Chil-Seong. Lee Jun-Ho is from a Korean boy band, 2PM. I didn’t really know of Lee Jun-Ho because to me, he’s one of the lesser known members in 2PM, overshadowed by more prominent members like Ok Taecyeon or Nichkhun. Until I saw him acting in the comedy coming-of-age film, Twenty with Kim Woo-bin and Kang Ha-neul.
Seo Poong is a star chef who specialises in cooking Chinese cuisine. In Wok of Love Korean Drama, he lost his job that he works really hard for and his wife, who he just got married to, was cheating on him with the boss that owns the hotel of the Chinese restaurant he used to work for. Determined to seek his revenge, he tries to set up business and compete in a small Chinese restaurant opposite that hotel. His character is one who is very serious and professional when it comes to his job as a chef. He’s always shouting and shouting all the time in the kitchen, snaps his fingers and takes the message in his fortune cookie all too seriously.
Jang Hyuk as Doo Chil-Seong
Finally, Jang Hyuk plays Doo Chil-Seong, the other main male lead. I like Jang Hyuk a lot. I think he is very charismatic and manly. You’ll know if you ever watched the Korean variety show, Real Men where it features male celebrities as they experience life in the military. He was one of the original cast members together with Park Hyung-sik. Always in action shows where he tries to do all the stunts himself, I think he is trained in martial arts and his fight scenes are good. There’s also a humorous side to him as you can see when he starred alongside Jun Ji-hyun in Windstruck in 2004, 14 years ago. You will see more of the funny side of him in Wok of Love Korean Drama.
Doo Chil-Seong is an ex-gangster boss who runs a money lending company and owns the entire building where the small Chinese restaurant resides on the first floor where Seo Poong is trying to set up business. He’s biggest wish is so that the gangster men who follows him runs the Chinese restaurant together with Seo Poong (it’s easier said than done because all of them don’t get along), get married and have a family of their own, basically lead normal lives and retire from being gangsters. He can fight well and wears shades all the time in Wok of Love Korean Drama. He is fierce and respected by his men but when it comes to Dan Sae-Woo whom he fell in love with at first sight, he can’t seem to say no.
