Pauline already celebrated my Birthday with me over the weekend at Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora but when she knew I haven’t got plans on my actual birthday, she asked me out again. And since Alicia is working with her at the same company, I asked Alicia along and she brought CG too. It’s a good thing, I spent almost half a day on my Birthday just lying in bed watching Korean dramas. If they didn’t ask me out for dinner, I think I’ll probably won’t even get out of my house on my Birthday. This is a Yakitori & Sake place that both the girls knew and recommended, Birders.
These days you don’t really see much of him on TV anymore, Birders (鳥人) is actually opened by the actor Adam Chen. I heard from Alicia, Birders used to be at the Tanjong Pagar area. I’m not sure if they have moved or the Keong Saik one is their second outlet.
Cup Sakes
One of the things unique about Birders is their Cup Sakes. You know usually when you order Sake, it’s either a small cup of it or you have to get a bottle that you usually can’t finish in a single meal. Birders offer a wide variety of Sakes packaged in a cup size, which comes in different and nice prints on the cups, you can even bring the cup home as a souvenir. I like alcoholic drinks that are sweet so I was recommended to order the Mikuni Bare (Toyama) that is a slightly sweet Sake, it’s the one with the flowers print on the cup, on the far right. The middle one is the Takasago Zoo Cup (Hokkaido) I think and I don’t remember the name of the one on the left with the deer and autumn leaves.
I learnt during this meal that Pauline is not very tolerable to Sake. She can take lots of wines but not Sake. After a while she gets tired and should I say a little drunk after drinking Sake. Now I know how to get Pauline drunk, Sake!
Sharing – Potato Salad: Yuzu Mayo, Mentaiko
Alicia was not sure if the Potato Salad she ordered this time was the right one as she remembered it to be a cold dish at Birders instead of a warm one for this one. No complains, the Potato Salad was pretty delicious.
Fillers – Chirashi Don: Assorted Sashimi Cubes, Ikura, Sushi Rice
We all seemed to be on a low-carb diet, ended up only eating the main Sashimi Cubes & Ikura, leaving behind much of the Sushi Rice for the Chirashi Don at Birders.
Yakitori
And then there’s Yakitori, lots of Yakitori offerings at Birders. The Yakitori will cost about $3.50 to $8, mostly they were at about $4. There were many Yakitori to choose from but some of those I find more special are as follow..
Heart: Negi, Ginger
If you like chicken innards, this is the Yakitori Heart.
Quail Eggs: Birders Shichimi & Liver: Miso, Spring Onions
There’s the Yakitori Liver, it has this unique bitter taste but I like. There’s also Yakitori Gizzard.
Breast: Cod Roe Mayo (or Mustard), Panko
Nagaimo Mentai: Yam, Cod Roe Mayo
Usually anything with Mentaiko or Cod Roe won’t go wrong. This is a combination of Yam and Cod Roe Mayo. In my opinion, it is unique but I feel they don’t really complement each other in terms of taste. The Yam is sweet and the Cod Roe Mayo is rich and salty, just doesn’t really go well together for me.
Tsukune: Onsen Egg, Tare
One thing I don’t like about Birders is, you can sit indoors but because there is such a big opening near the main door, there is not much of the air-con, it felt as if you are alfresco dining and you know with the hot Singapore weather these days, it isn’t very pleasant. I was or rather all of us were perspiring a lot while dining at Birders, we had Sake some more. Sakes heat things up.
It costs about $200+ for four of us, that’s about $50+ each. Do you think it’s pricey for a Yakitori place? Of course we had Sake too, that’s why it will cost more. When you are at Birders, don’t just have Yakitori, have some Sake too.
